The Senior Management Team
Sue MacDonald
Acting Professional
Standards Manager/
Nurse Advisor
Sue MacDonald has worked
for the Council for seven years.
She manages and assists
with continuing competence
processes and nurses under
the competence review
process. Sue completed
a Hospital Certifcate at
Wellington Hospital then
worked as both a staff nurse
and a charge nurse in various
community and hospital
settings in New Zealand and
overseas. She then moved
to nursing education, frst at
Manawatu Polytechnic and
then at Whitireia Community
Polytechnic as both a lecturer
and Acting Head of School.
Sue has a Master of Arts in
nursing.
Clare Prendergast
Health AND Conduct
Manager
Clare Prendergast, who is a
registered nurse and lawyer,
manages the legal team
and provides general legal
advice to the Council. Clare
registered as a nurse in 1977
after completing the Wellington
Hospital programme. She
completed a law degree while
continuing to work part-time
at Wellington Hospital. After
working as a legal editor for
Brookers, Clare joined the
Nursing Council in 1995. She
is a contributing author to
Health Care and the Law and
the Fundamentals of Nursing
3e on the Evolve website. She
has managed the Health and
Conduct areas since 2012.
Ana Shanks
Registration
Manager
Ana Shanks practised in
mental health nursing for
several years after completing
her comprehensive nursing
education at Wellington
Polytechnic in 1993. She also
has a Master of Arts (Nursing)
and a Postgraduate Certifcate
in Public Policy from Victoria
University of Wellington. Ana
joined the Nursing Council in
2008 as a Nurse Advisor and
was very involved with the
coordination and guidance of
the Council’s nurse practitioner
registration process. In early
2011 she moved into the role
of Registration Manager.
